Nault case: No charges
BONNERS FERRY — The Boundary County Prosecuting Attorney's office will not file criminal charges in the death of 16-year-old Reggie Nault.
Nault, a popular student and baseball player at Coeur d’Alene High School, drowned one year ago in Lake Coeur d’Alene while he was with two friends.
"This accident was and remains a horrible tragedy," Boundary County Prosecutor Jack Douglas said in a press release Friday. "Clearly, it has affected the families involved, and the community at large, in a profound way. However, based upon my review of this event and applicable Idaho law, I have determined that no criminal act can be shown to be a direct cause of Mr. Nault's death."
On July 21, 2015, Nault and two friends were boating on Lake Coeur d'Alene when Nault jumped or fell into the lake without a life jacket, reported the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office. The Boundary County press release states the boat was moving in excess of 50 mph.
Nault's body was recovered Aug. 3. An autopsy revealed alcohol intoxication.
The KCSO completed its investigation and forwarded it to Boundary County in January because of a potential conflict of interest between Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh and people involved in the investigation. On Thursday, the one-year anniversary of Nault's death, McHugh told The Hagadone News Network he had not heard anything about charging decisions on the case.
Attempts to reach Nault's mom, Brandi Jones, Friday were unsuccessful. However, she did express to the network her extreme disappointment with the investigation when asked about it on Thursday.
