Arbor Day celebration planned for Saturday

| June 1, 2016 1:00 AM

On Saturday the Sandpoint Arbor Day celebration and arboretum open house will take place at Lakeview Park on the corner of Ella and Ontario. This year will mark the 18th annual event, which is co-sponsored by the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society, the city of Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, the Sandpoint Tree Committee and the Bonner County History Museum.

The day will include a special dedication of mural artwork by KNPS member Marilyn McIntyre, as well as an Arbor Day celebration at 9 a.m., followed by native plants sale, bake sale, and tours. Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society members will be selling homemade baked goods. For gardeners who want to grow native, a wide selection of native plants from Cedar Mountain Perennials will be for sale.

Everyone is invited to stroll through the arboretum, where gardeners will be available to provide habitat tours and give detailed information on trees and plants in each area. The arboretum was developed in 1999 as a grass roots effort to provide an educational showcase of our native plants and to promote their conservation. It is located within the city park and maintained by volunteers from the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society. Come discover one of Sandpoint’s hidden gems.

The Bonner County History Museum is having a First Free Saturday and offers free admission for the entire day. Sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Conger. See exhibits featuring the various people who have lived in the region in our past.

The event takes place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lakeview Park, next to the Bonner County History Museum, 611 S. Ella and is open to the public, free of charge.
