Evalyn Finney’s letter to the editor calling Obama’s visit to Hiroshima offensive led me to think about her concept of ‘implied apology.” Although the President was very careful not to say anything that could be interpreted as an apology, Ms. Finney states that, “His going there was an implied apology.” I have made an incomplete list of other places the US has bombed: Philippines, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Spain, Korea, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba (oops, too late), Vietnam, Cambodia, Grenada, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Serbia, Pakistan, and Somalia. I’m sure others could add to the list. From now on any diplomatic visit to these countries by a sitting president should be considered an “implied apology.”
