SANDPOINT — It was a crystal-clear morning that would turn into a warmish afternoon. At First Christian Church, an expectant aura permeated the atmosphere as well-dressed families found their seats. At the stroke of 11, the 35 Forrest M. Bird high school graduates marched into the auditorium, clad in mortarboard caps and fluttering gowns.
Charter school student Austin Wilson sang a patriotic tribute to the Class of 2016 as they filled the chairs set aside for them. Principal Mary Jensen stepped up to the podium to welcome graduates, their families and their friends. Wendy Thompson, eighth- and ninth-grade English teacher, and Mark Webber, high school social studies teacher, delivered inspirational keynote speeches.
Student Solange Marcotte gave a special music presentation, and 2016 graduate Conrad Mearns spoke on behalf of his classmates.
Many of those receiving their diplomas Saturday morning had made plans to attend college. In fact, according to school officials, a good percentage of outgoing seniors had already earned college credit while finishing their studies at Forrest M. Bird charter school.
As the ceremony came to a close, the newly  minted graduates rejoined their families for congratulatory hugs and handshakes. Afterward, as small groups posed together in the sunlight for photos, their future looked indelibly bright.
