Herman Charles Crabb, 88, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Friday, June 3, 2016.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. Claude Duty, Spokane Wash., will conduct the services and a reception will follow at 1 p.m. at The Community of Christ, Sagle Church.
Herman was born on Feb. 2, 1928, in Sawyer, Idaho, the son of Clarence D. and Ruth Crabb. He went to grade school at the Long School and the Morton School, later going to the Sandpoint High School and the Central Valley High School in Spokane, Washington. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, serving in the Pacific Theater, during World War II.
On April 25, 1949, he married Roberta in Kernville, Calif., where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. On Jan. 1, 1955, he returned to Sagle, Idaho. He logged in North Idaho, also operating logging trucks, and was named “Bull of the Woods” in 1994. He also followed construction, working on highway bridges in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Naples, Idaho, prior to his retirement.
Herman was an ordained minister in The Community of Christ, the Sagle Church and was a lifelong member of the NRA. He enjoyed his saddle horses and had captured wild horses in Owyhee County, training them, and using them on his elk hunting trips. In his retirement he traveled to the desert country around Quartzite, Ariz., where he hiked, cooked out and collected rocks to bring home.
He enjoyed his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had many extended family members that had been taken in, and cared for, over the years.
Herman is survived by his wife, of 67 years, Roberta Crabb in Sagle, Idaho; three children, Bruce (and Marsha) Crabb, Bert Crabb, and Candy (and Pat) Moon all in Sagle, Idaho; six grandchildren, Jacque (and Toby) Gladwell in Kirkland, Wash., Ryan (and Lisa) Crabb in Sagle, Angie (and Matt) Brass in Sandpoint, Idaho, Nikki (and Aaron) Vierra in Sagle, Chrissy (and Coy) McKitrick in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Matt Ross in Brooklyn, N.Y. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and his brother, Ralph (and Leona) Crabb in Sagle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, four sisters, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson.
