Christopher Gene Goodwin, 44

Christopher Gene Goodwin, 44, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at his home near Sandpoint, Idaho.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1971, in Cedar City, Utah, to Martin Rex and Beverly Goodwin. He attended elementary and junior high schools in Oregon, Idaho and California, ultimately graduating from Pocatello High School in 1990.

He attended Idaho State University from 1990-1995 where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a minor in history. He attained a second Bachelor's Degree in law, as well as a Master's in education (social studies emphasis).

During his sophomore year in college, he met his wife, Angie Kalakay, at ISU. They were married on Jan. 5, 1993, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Follow-ing graduation, they pursued advanced degrees while living in Lansing, Mich., and Portland, Ore., and then chose to return to the Idaho Falls area to raise their growing family.

In 2014, he was offered an opportunity to teach U.S. history, Title 1 and martial arts at Forrest M. Bird Charter School in Sandpoint, Idaho. He and his family relocated near Sandpoint to begin a new chapter in their dream home location in the woods above Lake Pend Oreille.

Throughout his life, he was active in Shoto Kai, Boy Scouts, volleyball, skiing, fishing, and camping. He is a member of the LDS Church, Sandpoint Ward. He will always be remembered for his “unique” sense of humor, his love of family, and devotion to teaching. He was a thinker and delighted in his ability to engage others in lively conversation on topics ranging from politics to Star Wars or the current dire situation in Middle Earth.

Chris is survived by his wife, Angie Goodwin of Sandpoint; four children, Elder Brendyn Goodwin, 18, serving his mission in Honduras, Tayah Goodwin, 13, Karston Goodwin, 10, and Jarom Goodwin, 6; his parents, Rex and Beverly Goodwin of Sweet, Idaho; a brother, Michael (Connie) Goodwin of Seattle, a sister, Annette (Chris) Davis of Centerville, Utah, and several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 18 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sandpoint Ward, 602 Schweitzer Cutoff Road, with Bishop Mike Strock conducting. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. There will be a separate memorial service in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on April 9, 2016, at the Milo LDS Church.
