A Feb. 21 column by Rep. Heather Scott in the Daily Bee caught my attention. In the text of the column, Rep. Scott noted “The 2016 legislative session is halfway completed and, to date, we have printed over 350 bills and over 20 resolutions in both the House and Senate. The majority of the bills are introduced by government agencies.” Knowing that a town meeting with Rep. Scott and Rep. Sage Dixon was on the horizon, I decided to attend the meeting and express my opinion on this situation. After presenting my views, a number of attendees suggested I express my ideas via a letter to the editor; thus was the genesis for submitting my opinions listed below.
1. The vast majority of elected politicians pander to special interest groups to gain either money or their vote or both.
2. The most discriminatory entity in our country is the government. Government picks and chooses who will benefit from their actions and who will lose. Examples include both the state and federal tax code and affirmative action
3. If government bureaucrats write most of the legislation placed before the Legislature, then government agencies are only attempting to make themselves larger and more powerful.
4. Ask yourself how many laws are written to give us more freedom? Almost all laws put additional restrictions on the populous by taking away someone's freedoms. If most bills submitted to the Legislature are submitted by government agencie,s then the government is only gaining more power over you and that's exactly what they want and the Legislature is a willing accomplice.
