SANDPOINT — The best high school golfers in North Idaho got a taste of the Golden Bear’s handiwork, as The Idaho Club, the only Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Idaho, played host to the Sandpoint Invitational on a nearly perfect Tuesday.

Sandpoint sophomore Jack Reeves, no stranger to his home course, shot a varsity career-low 73, taking advantage of some course knowledge on a track that can punish wayward shots.

“Jack shot a 73 and the medalist shot a 72, and Jack had four penalty strokes,” said Tom Tharp, who witnessed a great hole between Reeves and Lakeland No. 1 Dylan Knight. “Dylan drove the green on the par 4 8th, hitting a beautiful shot five feet from the green. He missed the putt and got a birdie, while Jack chipped in for an eagle.”

The Bulldog boys, all underclassmen, shot a 316, the lowest score in recent memory for the boys team, if not ever. Reeves, along with Damien Fitzpatrick, Nick Crowley, Lake Wilks and Jacob Humrich, represent a bright future for the program.

“The boys played really, really well,” lauded Tharp.

Caroline Hawkins also took advantage of the home course familiarity, carding a career-low 88 to lead the Bulldog girls, while Ali Creighton was right behind with a 93. As they have in years past, the Bulldogs are getting a chance to practice at the Idaho Club, and the challenging track will dial in anyone’s game.

“That was her best tournament score ever,” said Tharp of Hawkins. “She’s been out there working really hard on her game. We always say to keep the putts under 18 for nine holes, and she was able to do that.”

Sandpoint is at the Lakeland Invitational on Thursday.
