In the past three weeks, numerous lengthy columns have appeared on the Daily Bee’s editorial page, some even including detailed charts. They were written by Sandy Patano, who is described as a member of Republican North Idaho Political Action Committee, on topics on interests to the noble mission of this PAC.

This begs a number of questions:

1. Why is a partisan PAC allowed editorial space at all?

2. Can other PACS claim the same privilege? (Although I shudder at the thought of dueling PACS.)

3. Journalistic ethics, and the Bee’s editorial page policy, would dictate that one writer alone not monopolize the editorial page two to three times a week, let alone a PAC-associated one.

4. Because Ms. Patano’s frequent op-eds take up a significant amount of space on the editorial page, other letters take weeks to be published.

It all seems highly unethical.

Editor’s note: The columns, which focused on the voting records of all candidates in North Idaho, did not endorse any of those running for office. As such, they did not fall under the 150-word limit and were reviewed individually to ensure they met this guideline. At no time did they impact other letters inclusion in the Bee. Instead, we have opted to run additional letters pages to ensure all election letters are running in a timely fashion.
