Gateway design prompts concern

SANDPOINT — In the wake of the city's War Memorial Field open house May 11, during which the architect, design team, project advisors and city officials shared final plans for the renovation of Barlow Stadium and the new gateway, some of those who are likely to be most affected by the renovation — adjacent property owners — are harboring concerns.

While the overall plan to refurbish the outdated stadium is one voters agreed upon when they said yes to the 1 percent city tax to fund the project, some neighboring residents do not agree with the final gateway design.

According to Kim Woodruff, Sandpoint Parks and Recreation director, the planned gateway to the field includes eight banners, each an artistic communication of the venue's multiple uses, such as sports and performance arts.

The proposed gateway looms considerably larger than the existing entrance, soaring up to 30 feet high, which would change the view significantly from neighboring yards.

Woodruff pointed out that the finalized designs for the stadium makeover have been years in the making, and concerned parties had many opportunities to get involved before the 11th hour. However, he respects the fact that they are coming forward with their concerns before construction gets underway.

"We tried to be inclusive of everyone. The public process is awesome," said Woodruff. "It's the City Council's prerogative to change things. There may still be a little leeway," he said.

The Sandpoint City Council will review and vote on whether to approve bid documents and the request to advertise for bids at its Wednesday night meeting, which takes place in the council chambers at City Hall, 1123 Lake St., at 5:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
