Dietrick, Anselmo lead a dozen Spartans heading to 3A state track meet

SPIRIT LAKE — The Spartan boys finished second to Timberlake for the second consecutive year at the 3A District 1 meet at Timberlake High, but more importantly, qualified a dozen athletes to the 3A state track meet.

Collin Dietrick cleared 5-8 to win the long jump, and the 4x200 team of Tommy Anselmo, Drayven Ayers, Spencer Sedgwick and Michael Taylor notched a win, the lone two titles for the Spartans, who racked up a lot of podium finishes to earn the state berths.

“Tommy and Collin both had outstanding meets as they both qualified for state in three events,” said head coach Jared Hughes, also praising Taylor for qualifying in the 200. “It was great to see Michael qualify in two events as a senior, especially after he sprained his ankle a few weeks ago.”

Jacob Campbell qualified, but will not be competing at state as he will be at the national underwater robotics competition.

Clay Pelton continues to show improvements in both the 400 and pole vault, Corbin Maltba could be a state dark horse and Konner Durham continues to drop time in the hurdles. The Spartans will be fighting for podium spots at state, and much of the credit goes to the coaches.

“Coach Clark and Coach Mortensen deserve a lot of credit for our success this year,” said Hughes of his assistants. “They have been great to work with.”

The state 3A meet is next Friday and Saturday at Middleton High.
