Incumbents claim primary victories
SANDPOINT — Late-arriving ballots may have delayed the outcome, but by the time the final ballots were counted, incumbents in District 1 legislative races were victorious.
And by the time the final ballots were counted, Democrat write-in candidate Stephen F. Howlett pulled off a win over Steve Tanner, 408-392.
The first ballots couldn’t be counted until aftr 9:30 p.m. and crews had to open absentee ballots, which were still in their envelopes.
In the volatile GOP race for the Idaho Senate District 1 seat, with an unknown number of precincts reporting, incumbent Shawn Keough had 2,253 votes to Glenn Rohrer's 1,428 votes in Bonner County. Keough also won in Boundary County, 1,279-904. The winner in the primary will face off with Steve Tanner, who is running as a Democrat, in the general election. Although running unopposed in the primary, Tanner received 314 votes in Bonner County and 78 votes in Boundary County. In Bonner County, Howlett received 116 votes in Boundary County and 292 in Bonner County.
Incumbent Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll battled hopeful Carl Crabtree for the Republican nomination in District 7, with the victor slated to run against Democrat Ken Meyers in the general election this fall. Nuxoll had 320 votes to Crabtree's 312, while Meyers captured 82 votes in Bonner County.
Both Kate McAlister, D, and incumbent Heather Scott, R, were unopposed in their respective primaries for Idaho District 1 House Seat A. Nevertheless, McAlister collected 632 votes while Scott garnered 2,789. The two will face off in earnest in the general election for the chance to serve in the District 1 seat.
In the race to represent District 1 Idaho House of Representatives, Position B, Sage Dixon, R, was unopposed in the primary, but had received 2,789 votes. In the Democratic side of the ticket Bob Vickaryous had 238 votes while write-in candidate Stephen Howlett had an unknown number of votes.
The State Rep. race for District 7 Position A saw Priscilla Giddings, R, vying for votes with incumbent Rep. Shannon McMillan, R. Giddings had 207 votes to McMillan's 387. Democrat Jessica Chilcott had 85 votes. The race for State Rep. District 7 Position B pitted Paul E. Shepherd, R, against Kris L. Steneck, R. Incumbent Shepherd had 342 votes, and Steneck had 215 votes.
In the U.S. Senate race, Constitution Party candidates Pro-Life and Ray J. Writz had 1 and 1 votes respectively while Democrat Jerry Sturgill had 167 votes and incumbent Mike Crapo, Republican, had 930 votes.
In the U.S. House of Representatives District 1 seat, on the Democrat ballot, Shizandra Fox had 46 votes, Staniela Nikolova had 19 votes, and James Piotrowski had 91. On the Republican ballot, Gordon Counsil had 114 votes, Isaac M. Haugen had 104 and incumbent Raul R. Labrador had 767
In the Supreme Court justice race to succeed Jim Jones, Robyn Brody had 1,350 votes, Sergio A. Gutierrez had 916 votes, Curt McKenzie had 1,382 votes and Clive J. Strong had 609 votes.
Roger S. Burdick, who was unopposed to retain his Supreme Court seat, had 3,859 votes. Molly J. Huskey, running to retain her Appellate Court seat, had 3,875 votes.
