Collado, Graham pace Bulldogs at state track

| May 21, 2016 1:00 AM

BOISE - Senior Carlos Collado waited for the most opportune time to uncork his best throw of the season, and when the discus landed 149-0 feet from where he threw it, the mark was good enough for a third place finish on Friday during day one of the 4A state Track and Field Championships at Donna Larson Park.

“Carlos threw a great PR, eclipsing his Regional throw. He was ranked fifth going in and jumped two spots with a great throw,” said Bulldogs head coach Matt Brass. “I was impressed with the kids’ results today. Many PRs and a few podium finishes.”

Also nabbing a spot on the podium was senior Jacob Graham, who finished fifth in the 3,200 with a PR of 9:49, earning his first ever state podium. He’ll be looking to duplicate the feat today in the 1,600.

“Jacob’s race was outstanding,” described Brass, noting Graham did all he could. “He hung with the leaders through the 2,200 and faded.”

The girls medley relay team earned the final podium spot for the Bulldogs, as Paige DuMars, Claire Keener, Jaelyn Martin and Hannah Davidson finished fourth in the medley, thanks to a strong finishing lap by Davidson.

“They were in third and the second handoff was not good, and dropped to seventh,” described Brass of the relay. “Hannah ran a sub 60 (400) to pull them to fourth.

Other notable performances were turned in by senior Cori McClelland, who rose to the occasion at state and dropped eight seconds off her PR to finish seventh in the 3,200, the final Bulldog to score points on the day.

The boys team was in 8th place the girls 11th after the first day.

Other notable finishes: T.J. Davis ran a PR in the prelims of the 110 high hurdles to make today’s final; Spencer Bassett was 15th in triple jump at 39-1.
