Pelton, 4X200 relay team 5th at state track meet

PRIEST RIVER — A pair of fifth place finishes highlighted a strong performance by the Priest River boys track and Field team last weekend at the 3A state meet in Middleton, where the Spartans exceeded their seed marks to finish in 17th place.

Competing in the pole vault, where unlike many of the events wet and windy weather can play a huge role, Clayton Pell rose to the occasion and tied his PR with a vault of 12 feet, earning a spot on the podium and surpassing his No. 8 seeded mark.

The other fifth place finish was turned in by the 4X200 relay team of Tommy Anselmo, Drayven Ayers, Spencer Sedgwick and Michael Taylor, who clocked a 1:36.25 in a very tight finish.

“They were seeded 8th, but competed well and had good hand-offs to pass up three other teams,” described Spartans head coach Jared Hughes, who was proud of his team’s performance. “I thought the kids did very well. As a team we scored 7.5 points and finished in 17th place. This may not sound great, but we were seeded 21st and seeded to score only two points.”

Taylor earned the admiration of his coach with a strong anchor leg in the 4X200 relay, after finishing 15th in the 100 meters.

“He battled through a sprained ankle or would have finished higher,” said Hughes. “He ran a great anchor and took us from 7th to 5th.”

Although none of the other Spartans scored team points with top eight finishes, several kids had season bests and surpassing their state seeds.

“This is testament to our kids’ competitive nature,” lauded Hughes. “I was impressed with the three freshmen distance runners. Competing at state for the first time is very nerve racking and they did great.”

Collin Dietrick ran a PR in the 110 high hurdles, as he was seeded 15th and finished 10th, while also posting personal bests to finish 9th in the high jump and 10th in the long jump, again bettering his seed mark.

Another neat event at state was when Kenny Chesnut won the 100m Unified Race. This is a chance for kids who run in the Special Olympics to compete at the regular state meet.

Other Spartan finishes included Tommy Anselmo placing 12th in both the 100 and 400, Corbin Maltba finishing 8th in the pole vault, Konner Durham finished 17th after a PR in the 110 high hurdles, Pelton 18th in the 400, Brandon McCracken 16th in the 800, and freshman distance runners Caleb Gleason and Cameron Parks finished 10th and 12th, respectively, in the 3,200, gaining rare state experience.

“The coaching staff is also excited for next year,” said Hughes. “We will be returning 11 of the 12 state qualifiers and are poised for a great 2017 season.”
