All of us have been petitioned through the campaign promises of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Both had convincing, and unconvincing, elements to their policies, yet one question persists. What does Clinton mean when she speaks of progress? In her speech to the NAACP and DNC acceptance speech she talks about progress like it’s a self-evident truth. This couldn’t be further from the truth, there is nothing self-evident about such a subjective and historically significant term. Does she speak of the original progressive movement’s promotion of discrimination or the modern conception where hard work is optional?

My guess is that she defines progress as America’s journey away from past traditions and ideology. In Clinton’s acceptance speech, she lists all her policy agendas, most of which are in direct conflict with the principles of the Constitution, but she concludes with the words, “progress is possible.” Additionally, her NAACP speech calls on police officers to help make this progress possible.

My conclusion is that Clinton’s era of progress will become our modern day Gilded Age. Where government will look bright and shiny, but its core decays under policies designed to promote fairness and equality.
