Flowering rush pull at Dog Beach

| November 5, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Volunteers will be gathering at Dog Beach on Saturday to pull flowering rush, an aquatic noxious weed which can choke out swimming areas.

Volunteers are meeting at 9 a.m. to pull the weeds by hand. There will coffee and snacks.

Participants are asked to mark at the public lot across from the Waterfront Conoco and make their way to Dog Beach using the cycling and pedestrian path. Volunteers are asked to bring rubber boots, a trowel, bucket and gloves.

Pulling the weeds by hand has proven effective in keeping swimming areas clear of the weed at Sandpoint City Beach and volunteers are hoping to replicate that success at Dog Beach, a popular waterfront destination for those with pets.

The prolific weed, which is believed to have washed downstream from the Clark Fork River, can fill in shallow bays and breed swimmer’s itch.
