Movie perks interest in helping teens

SANDPOINT — The production of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" Wednesday was a huge success, said Barb Perusse a professional counselor in Sandpoint.

When Perusse woke up Wednesday morning she didn't know whether to expect 20 or 200 people at the event, but more than 270 students and adults packed the Panida.

"It was one of the best nights I've ever experienced and we are going to do more," she said.

The event was aimed at local youth with a panel discussion held after the movie to address how suicide has affected teens in the community. Perusse said the movie was recommended to her by local teens because it deals with a range of issues, such as sexual abuse, suicide, bullying, LGBTQ issues and being an outcast.

Sandpoint High School teacher Scott Fitchett spoke at the end of the movie and Perusse recalled his mantra: "We are, we can, we will make a difference." He then had the students stand up and connect with each other, Perusse said.

"We had tons of counselors that volunteered their time to be there in case anyone needed to talk — it was just such a community event," she said. "All of our schools here were just so supportive about getting our kids there and were a great help."

Summit Insurance sponsored the event, so the movie, popcorn and drinks were free for all who attended, and three iPad Mini's were donated as raffle prizes by Bonner General Health and Family Health Center.
