Driver arrested following crash

SANDPOINT — A Sagle man has been arrested for leaving the scene of an injury crash near Lake Pend Oreille’s Garfield Bay on Friday night.

Jacob Wade Callen is being prosecuted at the felony level, according to a criminal complaint.

Callen, 28, is accused of crashing his Dodge pickup truck in the 300 block of Garfield Bay Cutoff Road shortly before 10:30 p.m. He was later found at his residence off Gun Club Road and denied being behind the wheel, police reports said. Callen claimed his neighbor drunkenly crashed the pickup and left the scene when Callen went looking for somebody to help get the truck back onto the road.

But Bonner County sheriff’s deputies ultimately disputed Callen’s claim and said blood evidence effectively placed Callen behind the wheel, police reports said.

Callen told deputies he consumed two beers once he arrived at home. His breath-alcohol concentration at the Bonner County Jail was measured at 0.17, which is more than two times the legal limit to drive.

Callen was convicted of felony driving under the influence in a Boundary County case in 2013. He also has a DUI conviction dating back to 2007 in Boundary County, according to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository. Callen was the subject of a Boundary County arrest warrant when he was arrested in Bonner County.

Callen made an initial appearance via video link from the Bonner County Jail. Judge Lori Meulenberg declined to released Callen on his own recognizance and imposed bail of $25,000 court records show. A public defender was appointed to represent Callen.

A preliminary hearing in the case is pending.
