a nip in the air, and plenty of fun around town

SANDPOINT — There’s a nip in the air and a warm and wonderful week of entertainment afoot. Panida movies, a great POAC Perform-ance Series show, Hamlet continues its run at the Heartwood Center, plus a holiday shopping event at Community Hall, some good, old-fashioned activism at the library and a benefit fundraiser at Columbia Bank.

Thursday, Nov. 17

‘A Man Called Ove’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

‘A Man Called Ove’ tells the familiar story of the curmudgeonly old man whose grumpy life is brightened by forces beyond his control. These forces take the guise of a much younger person who provides a sense of purpose for the old hero. A film like this rises or falls not only with its central performance, but also with its ability to engage the viewer’s emotions in a credible, honest fashion. Rated PG-13

‘John Lennon: Through a Glass Onion’

‘John Lennon: Through A Glass Onion’ celebrates the genius, music and phenomenon of John Lennon. Part concert and part biography, revealing the true essence of the life and astonishing talent of one of the world’s most recognized voices and treasured icons. ‘Hamlet’

Love, loyalty, and carefully crafted facades give way to death and decay in one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays, ‘Hamlet: The Prince Of Denmark’ as adapted and directed by Michael Bigley. Don’t miss this passionate tragedy featuring some of Sandpoint’s best talent, presented by Unknown Locals.

POAC presents ‘Living Voices: Native Vision’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6:30 p.m., program starts at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18

As part of the POAC’s Performance Series, follow along as a Navajo girl explores her family’s past while struggling to keep her culture in a government-run boarding school. Her vision of becoming a modern healer in a changing world is brought to life as her community joins the U.S. in World War II.

Patrice Webb

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18

Patrice Webb is a singer/songwriter whose music takes her from California to the hills of North Idaho. She had been compared to folk icons such as Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Her music swings, cries the blues and tells stories in a way that only American folk music can do.

Devon Wade

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18

Devon is an independent country music artist out of Sandpoint Idaho with a strong love for what country music has always been, songs about real life.

‘Little Mermaid, Jr.’

Venue: Pend Oreille Playhouse, 236 S. Union Ave., in Newport, Wash.

Time: 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18

The Pend Oreille Players presents 20 teenagers singing and dancing to the exuberant tunes of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid, Jr.’ The musical is directed by Jessi Marrazzo and music direction is by Millie Brumbaugh. Additional shows on Nov. 19 & 20.

‘Fill a Bowl’ Fundraiser

Venue: Columbia Bank Atrium, 414 Church St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 4-8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19

This benefit for Bonner Homeless Transitions and the Bonner Community Food Bank features delicious soup, bread and a chocolate truffle, plus great local items in an amazing raffle and games galore.

Admission: $20, which includes meal. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Bring a non-perishable food item to donate and receive a free raffle ticket.

‘Add the Words’

KPBX Kids’ Concert

Two of Spokane’s familiar folk singer/guitarists, Jen Edgren and Steve Simmons, will lead everyone in old favorites from the U.S. and around the globe.

Lyrics projected on the Bing’s movie screen so readers can sing along! A sample of some of the selections: ‘Guantanamera, ‘Yellow Submarine,’ ‘Buffalo Gals,’ ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game,’ and ‘Puff the Magic Dragon.’

Wylie and the Wild West with Spokane Symphony

Wylie Gustafson, an American original, is returning to perform with the Spokane Symphony under the direction of conductor Morihiko Nakahara. For the past 25 years, Wylie and his band, The Wild West, have performed their one-of-a-kind blend of cowboy, swing, folk and yodeling music worldwide. Critics have called the gifted singer, songwriter, rancher, horseman, and the world-famous yodeler ‘one of the few authentic voices of the West.’

‘Hoodoo USO’ Dance & Honor Flight Benefit

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 2-5:30 p.m., Sunday

The Hoodoo Valley Hoedowners are hosting a square and round dance at the Sandpoint Community Hall, which was a USO hall during World War II. ‘Hoodoo USO’ will honor the 75th anniversary of the USO and all veterans. There will be periods of open floor dancing that will be open to those who do not square or round dance.

There also will be 10-cent coffee and donuts, dollar dances and an auction. All proceeds will be donated to the Inland Northwest Honor Flight. All Veterans and community members are cordially invited to attend.

Fall Serenade Instructors Concert & Harvest Buffet Fundraiser

Venue: First Lutheran Church, 526 S. Olive Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20

The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint hosts its annual Fall Serenade Instructors Showcase Concert & Dinner Reception. Come and enjoy an evening of classical music performed by talented instructors, followed by a harvest buffet dinner and dessert auction. Dinner music provided by MCS student musicians.

Admission: $10 (or more, if you’d like) suggested donation. All funds raised go directly back to MCS students through Scholarship Programs.
