Panida fetes 89th birthday

| November 18, 2016 12:00 AM

This week at the Panida, it’s our birthday and “A Man Called Ove” opens. Screenings will be shown Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3:30 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 25 at 5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m.

On Satur-day, the Panida will host an open house to celebrate the theater’s 89th birthday. In November 1927, the Panida first opened its doors with a movie called “Now We’re Up in the Air” and, in November 1985, the finalization of the efforts to rescue the Panida from demolition was successful and the Panida was reopened for the benefit of the community.

A grand gala with a concert and speakeasy had been planned for the 19th but slow ticket sales forced the event to be canceled and the board will instead host an open house with birthday cake. The public is invited to drop by for cake and comradery.

Opening this week is the Swedish film “A Man Called Ove”. One of Sweden’s biggest locally-produced box office hits ever, director Hannes Holm finds the beating heart of his source material and Swedish star Rolf Lassgård, whose performance won him the Best Actor award at the 2016 Seattle International Film Festival, affectingly embodies the lovable curmudgeon Ove.

The film is rated PG-13 for language and difficult subject matter.
