Nov. 27, 1966 — WEDDING PLANNED

Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Ashton H. Manhart, U.S.A., were hosts at a social function Oct. 21 at Ankara, Turkey, to introduce Miss Irene Eylders, fiancée of 1/Lt. Kent L. Pietsch of Sandpoint. Some 50 guests attended.

Miss Eylders, whose home is in Amsterdam, Holland, has been a member of the personal staff of the ambassador to Turkey from The Netherlands for two years. The two young people met at embassy functions.

Lt. Pietsch, junior aide to Lt. Gen. Manhart, has been in Ankara since mid-March.

The wedding will take place Dec. 10 at a centuries-old Presbyterian church chapel near Miss Elyders home.

Miss Eylders is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marinus Eylders of Amsterdam.

Lt. Pietsch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Laurin Pietsch of Sandpoint and Hope and a 1964 graduate of West Point.

Mrs. Richard Brown and Mrs. Blaine Stevens were hostesses at an evening devoted to pinochle at the Brown home. The guest list included nine couples of their contemporaries.

Nov. 27, 1916 — UNION BUYS PROPERTY

Dover local 86 of the Farmers Union held a meeting at the G.A.R. hall Friday, at which it was decided to purchase the Sandpoint Concrete Works property, with a 75-ft. Lake street frontage and a side track from Spokane International. Two buildings are on the property, one to be used for an office and assembly hall, with kitchen, etc., for social gatherings, the other as a warehouse. A building will be constructed for Market Day use, with booths, tables and counters.

STORM OF PROTEST OVER PURCHASE

The spark of public spirit set off such a medley of explosions at Monday’s city council meeting as to let down an earthfall of opinion and effectually block any possibility of the city’s purchase of the Drumheller water system at the $150,000 price asked. From the moment the matter was brought up by Mayor Himes ‘til an 11 o’clock adjournment such a storm of protest arose that the matter was finally left open to await the likely action of the next legislature in abolishing the utilities commission or in curbing its power so as to allow the city to build a municipal system.

ENSIGN PAGE HERE

Ensign B.H. Page, U.S.N., accompanied by his bride of about a year, arrived here Wednesday and after a brief visit with local relatives, departed Friday morning for the east. His visit to the old home in Sandpoint was the result of his having been transferred from duty on the west coast to duty on the east coast.
