Local 4-H'ers honored by Idaho's governor
In late July, four members of the Eager Beavers 4-H Club flew to Weston, W.V. to compete in the National 4-H Forestry Invitational, which is the national championship contest for 4-H forestry project members.
Only 4-H members who placed very high in their respective state forestry contests are invited to compete at the national contest.
Joseph Spencer, Daniel Spencer, Nolan Largen and Lilly Falconer — all members of the Bonner County Eager Beavers 4-H Club — are all taking forestry as a 4-H project with project leaders Janet Benoit and Tracy Stutler. In 2015, they were the top team at the Idaho State Forestry Contest, which made them eligible to compete in the National 4-H Forestry Invitational this year, where they placed sixth out of 16 teams in the nation.
At the national competition, the 4-H members are tested in forestry skills and knowledge that includes: tree measurement, tree identification, forest evaluation, compass orienteering, topographic map use and forest insects and diseases.
The 4-H’ers who represented Idaho at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational recently received letters from Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter. The letter congratulated each participant for their hard work and diligence in qualifying for the national competition.
The governor’s letter also thanked each 4-H member for representing Idaho with pride and for accomplishing an extraordinary achievement.
