Local postal carrier recognized as year's best

PONDERAY — The Idaho Commission for Libraries’ Talking Book Service recently presented its Postal Carrier of the Year Recognition for 2015 to Postal Carrier Vicky Shilling, of the Ponderay post office.
The ICfL’s Talking Book Service ensures that any Idahoan who is unable to read standard print, or hold a book and/or turn the pages due to a physical limitation, never has to stop reading. The TBS mails out books, magazines, and playback equipment to eligible clients, free of charge.
A key to the success of this critical program is the support of the postal departments and postal carriers who serve the TBS clients. The TBS utilizes the U.S. Postal Service program that allows for mailing free matter domestically for the blind and other eligible persons with impairments.
Another essential component of the service are the clients themselves. And each year, the ICfL gives their TBS clients the opportunity to nominate their favorite postal carrier as the best. The clients share their stories of postal carriers who go so far above and beyond what is just required to do their jobs that they deserve recognition.
Out of 58 nominations, Ponderay postal carrier Vicky Shilling was chosen as the ICfL’s Postal Carrier of the Year for 2015. Ms. Shilling was nominated by TBS client Esther Burrows.
“No matter what the weather is like, no matter how late or dark the night, she delivers to my door, since I am handicapped, physically,” Burrows said of Shilling. “She really deserves to be recognized for service above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you, too, for helping keep my world open.”
The ICfL’s library consultant for the underserved, Sue Walker, said, “We are so proud of our Talking Book Service, which keeps reading easily accessible to our more than 3,500 clients, at no cost to them.” Walker added, “And our Postal Carrier of the Year Recognition is one way we showcase the vital role all Idaho postal carriers play in serving our clients’ unique needs.”
