As I drive over the Long Bridge toward Sandpoint and look down at Dog Beach seeing all of those steel pipes and steel I-beams just rusting away left over from the bypass or dumped there by the railroad, I just wonder what would happen if someone or some little kid got seriously injured while playing on all of that discarded steel. Who would be liable? The city of Sandpoint? Bonner County? The railroad? Or whoever just left all of those steel pipes and steel I-beams there in the first place? There is a lot of money just laying there rusting away plus being a terrible eyesore to everyone coming into Sandpoint.
I will be very happy, if I were allowed, to remove and sell all of those steel pipes and steel I-beams, then giving all of the profits from the sale to the city of Sandpoint or to Bonner County to be spent on athletics for our local kids. In a sense I would, “steal the steel.” But that, more then likely, will not happen. Maybe what would happen is the city of Sandpoint will put up some of its famous yellow signs stating “ don’t play on this steel, you could be seriously injured and no one will be liable.”
