Bulldogs battle back for big league win

| September 7, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Three unanswered second half goals helped ensure that the Bulldogs’ last game in front of the old bleachers at War Memorial Field was a memorable one.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Jack Rinck converted a penalty kick after a Lakeland player was called for a handball, and Christian Dressel converted a second penalty kick five minutes later and the Bulldogs never looked back, winning 3-1 over the Hawks in 4A Inland Empire League boys soccer action Tuesday night under the lights of War Memorial Field.

Dawson Mulder, who was fouled hard in the box to earn the Bulldogs (4-2-1, 1-0 4A IEL) a second PK, scored a third goal after beating several defenders with a long run to the goal, where he shot left and punched the ball past the keeper. The rest of the Bulldogs’ home games this season will be played at Pine St. Field.

“Huge league win. I love how they battled back. We came out a little nervy in our last game at Memorial,” said Bulldogs head coach Adam Tajan. “We drew with them twice last year. It was a real physical game, both teams played really hard.”

Lakeland (1-5-1, 0-1 4A IEL) had several nice attacks in the first half, as senior Cody Callahan keyed the attack and gave his team a 1-0 lead that would stand up at halftime.

Sandpoint gets a week off before another league tilt at Moscow.
