HOPE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Hope volunteer fire department met at the fire house last week with the following men present: Al Atherton, Orville Berkey, E.M. Butler, Ragnar Benson, Paul Croy, Jack Conn, Hubert Carter, Vernon May, Charles Cvancara, James Harting, Clarence Kauffman, George F. Phillips, George H. Phillips, J.W. Parker and E.R. Stokes.

Vernon May, recently elected fire chief, has had previous experience in fire fighting. He instructed each man in the operation of the fire truck and the equipment on it, always with the safety factor in mind.

A native of Pasadena, Calif., having been born there in 1907 and having lived all his life in Los Angeles county, he and Mrs. May made a permanent move to Hope last spring. At that time they purchased the Sherman Rucker house in East Hope and have since been busily engaged in remodeling it.

Sept. 8, 1916 — CAUGHT BY CAVE-IN

Eddie, the 9-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Folden, narrowly escaped death from suffocation by being buried by a cave-in last Saturday, and still suffers from the fracture of two ribs sustained in the accident. Eddie, who was playing in the sandpit north of the court house (corner of First and Lake street), was completely buried for a brief time. Passersby rescued him in an unconscious condition and some ladies near at hand rendered first aid. Dr. Jackson, being also near, took the case in hand, and to these circumstances doubtless the lad owes his life.

FATHER OF LOCAL EAGLES ORDER DIES

“Dad” Archer died quite unexpectedly Sunday night after a brief illness. Henry Archer, familiarly called “Dad” by his friends, was a well and favorably known Sandpoint character, prominent in the Eagle and Knights of Pythias circles, and also as manager of the Rink Opera house.

One of his first acts after coming to this city in 1905 was to accomplish the organization of the Sandpoint aerie of Eagles, in which he was assisted by Del Carey Smith of Spokane.

His funeral service will be held in the Brower undertaking parlors Sunday at 3 o’clock and will be conducted by the Eagles and the Knight of Pythias jointly. The Rev. W.G. Asher will officiate.
