University blanks Sandpoint in nonleague soccer
SANDPOINT — The Bulldog girls soccer team once again hosted a tough Greater Spokane League opponent, falling 2-0 to University in one of their better games of the season in defeat Thursday at Pine St. Field.
The Titans (3-0) scored in the 21st minute on a goal by Kelsey Crosby, but the Bulldogs (3-2-3) were able to mount several strong attacks in the first half, and nearly equalized when a blast off the foot of Casey Shaha slammed off the post.
As often happens when trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs began to attack for the equalizer, and got caught on a strong counter counter in the 53rd minute for the final goal of the game.
“I thought the first half was the most impressive we’ve been on attack. We hit the post once, and our runs and passes were dynamic, creative and fluid. We didn’t score, but all of our attaching players showed some creativity that I haven’t seen yet,” said Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski, whose defense was tested often. “Our defense was usually good, but some significant mistakes cost us.”
University out-shot the Bulldogs 18-8, with freshman goalie Shea Kilpatrick making some nice saves to keep the game close for the Bulldogs.
Sandpoint continues to possess and link passes well, and as they continue to develop some potency in the attacking third are emerging as one of the better teams in North Idaho.
The Bulldogs host Coeur d’Alene on Saturday at noon.
