Native plant talk scheduled

SANDPOINT — On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society and Sandpoint Parks and Recreation are teaming up for a talk on native plants.

The program — “Research Topics in Native Plants” — will take place from 9:45-11:30 a.m. at Sandpoint Community Hall. Jim Ekins will present results of a variety of recent research project using native plants, including the use of a floating wetland to improve water quality. The talk will be held at Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 First Ave., and is open to the public, free of charge.

Jim Ekins is the area extension educator in water for the University of Idaho Extension. His major role is to develop non-formal educational programs based on the best available science. Ekins has a natural resource degree from Western Carolina University and a master’s degree in collaboration and volunteerism from the University of Oregon. He has worked in three national parks, on a research base in Antarctica, and in wetland restoration for watershed councils in Oregon and Idaho. He’s an avid canoeist, skier, and runner.
