Mulder scores hat trick as Bulldogs, Timberwolves play to 3-3 tie

| September 20, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Lake City’s Travis Swallow and Sandpoint’s Dawson Mulder waged a scoring duel, each netting hat tricks as the Timberwolves and Bulldogs played to a 3-3 draw on Monday night in nonleague boys soccer action at Pine St. Field.

Mulder now has 13 goals on the season for the Bulldogs (4-2-4), and his first goal of the game, a flip off the side of his foot, was the lone goal of the first half.

Swallow wasted little time finding the equalizer, scoring in the first minute of the second half to start a barrage of five goals in less than 30 minutes.

It appeared Sandpoint had the game in hand after two more Mulder goals, one off a slick pass from Amos Crossingham in the box, staked the Bulldogs to a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute.

Swallow had other ideas, finishing an assist from Cole Fawcett to draw within one in the 64th minute, before finding the back of the net for another equalizer in the 70th minute. He was able to do most of his damage attacking the top of the box from the middle, where he blasted shots on goal all game.

Mitch Rust was busy for the Bulldogs, who were outshot on the day by the T-Wolves, stopping 12 shots in goal.

The Bulldogs host Lewiston on Saturday.

n Mead handles Bulldog girls

SANDPOINT — Yeo Yarnell scored her third goal of the season, but it was the lone tally for the Bulldogs, who fell 6-1 to Mead in nonleague girls soccer in Spokane on Monday.

Mead scored in the 21st, 32nd, 36th, 50th, 65 and 68th minutes, punishing the Bulldogs (3-4-3) every time they had a miscue in the defensive third.

Despite the loss and being out-shot to the tune of 18-6, Bulldog head coach Conor Baranski felt his team played much better than in a 2-1 loss to Coeur d’Alene previously. Freshman Shea Kilpatrick continues to get plenty of action, stopping 12 shots in goal in defeat.

“We made four bonehead mistakes, we gifted them four goals, and they are a quality team. Any mistake we made, they scored off. Without those simple errors, it would have been very respectable,” lamented Baranski, who feels no team left on the schedule will be as tough as Mead. “Our goal was fantastic. A team goal that started from the back, went through the midfield, played into Casey’s (Shaha) feet, Yeo ran through, Casey fed her and Yeo had a fantastic finish.”

Sandpoint is at Lewiston on Saturday.
