This is a response to the “My Turn” column written by Maureen Tillberg (Sept. 9, 2016), which sarcastically criticized Idaho legislators for doing their jobs instead of advancing her personal beliefs. I will use two objective founding documents to critique her subjective article, which is based on her feelings, with no reference to any founding documents.

Firstly, she criticized Idaho legislators for correclty acknowledging the concealed carry of a firearm as a right instead of a privilege. Apparently, she believes in a “Bill of Privileges” instead of a “Bill of Rights.” She says in her column that carrying a firearm is a privilege given to a people by legislators. According to our founding documents, bearing arms is a right (United States Constitution, Second Amendment), that comes from God (the Declaration of Independence says that all men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.)

Secondly, she criticizes Idaho legislators for doing their job to protect the right to life, which is found in the Declaration of Independence. If we cannot outlaw murdering unborn children, shouldn’t we at least try to make it more difficult? It is wise to require people who are considering an abortion to see what it is they are “aborting.”

Idaho legislators did the right thing by defending the right to life (found in the Declaration of Independence), and propertly ackknowledging concealed carry of a firearm as a right not a privilege. This is exactly what our legislators are supposed to do: defend the constitutional rights of Idahoans.
