Rinck, Mulder score goals to lead Bulldogs past Hawks

| September 29, 2016 1:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Dawson Mulder continues to light up opposing defenses, scoring two second half goals to lead the Bulldogs to a big 3-1 win over Lakeland on Wednesday in a 4A Inland Empire League boys soccer match at Sunrise Rotary Field.

Jack Rinck got the Bulldogs (7-2-4, 2-0-1) on the board early off an assist from Amos Crossingham in the 8th minute, before Dade McDevitt scored for the Hawks (2-8-2, 0-3 4A IEL) as the game was tied 1-1 at half.

Mulder scored twice to put the game away, and now has 18 goals on the season, as defenses are having trouble stopping him despite ample attention, the mark of a dangerous target forward. The win keeps the Bulldogs on pace to earn the coveted No. 1 seed at districts.

Sandpoint is at Lake City on Saturday.

SANDPOINT — Harley Hendry scored two first half goals, and goalies Morgan Bixenstein and Dani Dowd made sure it was enough, as Lakeland earned a 2-1 win over Sandpoint in 4A Inland Empire League girls soccer on Wednesday at Pine St. Field.

Lakeland (5-7-1, 1-2 4A IEL) got on the board early, when Hendry punched a low free kick from 25 yards out past a wall and just inside the post for an early lead.

The Bulldogs (3-5-4, 2-1 4A IEL) got the equalizer when Jezza Hutto punched a nice ball up the middle, connecting with Riley Walkington, who blasted it far post. Less than 10 minutes later Hendry attacked up the side and was able to punch the eventual game winner past the keeper.

Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski called it a tough game to swallow, as his team was not just unlucky by hitting the crossbar twice and missing a penalty kick, but wasted some quality looks by shooting right at the Hawks’ keepers.

The Bulldogs possessed more, and out-shot the Hawks, but Baranski didn’t feel his team had the urgency necessary for a league game.

“Many times, I felt Lakeland wanted to win more than we did. I am hoping this is a wakeup call for my team. I think they have been guilty of looking past these league games, and already assuming we are going to state,” said Baranski. “We will not be going to state if we don’t improve, and that improvement is going to have to come fast, as our season comes to a close.”

Sandpoint hosts Lake City on Saturday at noon.
