Bulldogs fall short against 5A Timberwolves

| September 30, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — There are no such things as moral victories, at least not in any win/loss column, but the Bulldogs can take away some positives despite being swept 25-20, 25-22, 30-28 to the Timberwolves in nonleague volleyball Thursday night at Les Rogers Court.

The Timberwolves (17-1) trailed by seven points in the second set, before rallying to win, as every set came down to the wire. Arlaina Stephenson finished with six kills, Klaire Mitchell 11 assists, Chloe Knudson 16 digs, Zion Nelson three blocks and Reilley Chapman two aces to go with some stellar back row play for the T-Wolves.

“Awesome team effort,” said Lake City assistant Renee Bordelon. “The goal is to be the best in a month.”

Kayla Neumann led the Bulldogs (15-7) with 12 kills and 22 digs, Laney Search added seven kills, 22 assists and four aces, and Grace Kirscher had a strong night at the net with seven kills at a robust .429 hitting percentage.

Despite being swept, it was some of the best volleyball the Bulldogs have played all season, as both of the final two sets could have gone either way. For lengthy stretches, the Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with one of the best 5A teams in the state, all without the services of starter Grace Hicks.

“Missing a starter, that’s huge to compete with one of the best teams around,” said Bulldogs head coach Erin Roos. “We gave them a match.”

Sandpoint is at Lewiston on Saturday.
