Spring serenades community with entertainment, fun

| April 6, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Ah, the serenade of birds in the mornings and frogs at night — plus the sounds of concerts and great live music all over the area! Spring is most definitely upon us. Be sure to check out the premier performance of Right Front Burner Friday night at the 219 Lounge, plus two nights of dinner concerts by John Craigie on Saturday and Sunday at Di Luna’s Café. The Pearl Theater in Bonners Ferry has a concert Saturday night, and you can catch Bright Moments Jazz at two different venues — Eichardt’s and IPA — both Friday and Saturday nights.

To round things out, the Panida Theater has a lovely film showing Thursday-Sunday this week, with lots of showtime options.

Plenty of action out there, so let’s proceed to check it out:

Thursday, April 6

‘Growing up Smith’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

A nostalgic drift back in time to American suburbs in 1979 as we see the struggles of a 10-year-old boy falling in love with the beautiful girl in the neighborhood. He is Smith Bhatnagar (played by Roni Akurati) and he struggles with bullies, but his struggle is compounded by his accent and his culture. Amy, the ‘girl next door,’ is played by Brighton Sharbino and she befriends him to empower him against his adversaries.

Tickets available at the box office and online at: panida.org

Brandon Watterson

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 312 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6-8 p.m.

Solo Singer/Songwriter night: Come out for a night of music with a longtime local with a great sound you’ve probably heard in the past with numerous bands. In this setting, you’ll hear just him and his guitar.

Right Front Burner

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

What a night this is going to be! It’s RFB’s first show at the 219, and it comes on an auspicious date — On April 7, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition and signed a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer, in the United States, as long as it remained below 4 percent alcohol by volume.

The 219 will host a tap takeover by Rogue Brewing! Sample, drink and imbibe in some of their greatest beers. They also welcome 2 Towns Cider House and a couple of their refreshing bevs.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Bright Moments Jazz

Venue: Eichardt’s Pub & Grille, 212 Cedar St., in Sandpoint

Time: 7-10 p.m.

It’s been a while since we’ve been treated to the stellar sound of this band, so don’t miss a golden opportunity to get in on some truly great musicianship.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Strangled Darlings

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Built on a deep sense of rhythm and groove, carried by George on the mandolin and Jess on custom tenor bass and foot drums. His mandolin bursts out in a slalom of notes and snare drum rhythms. Her solid body custom tenor bass weaves intricate counter melody and her feet pound a percussive groove.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Riff Hangers

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 312 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30-9:30 p.m.

This local band describes themselves as an acoustic band, with traditional bluegrass/folk instruments. However, our style is an amalgam of many genres including country, blues, and swing. Break out the dancing shoes!
