Timberwolves sweep Bulldogs

| April 14, 2017 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Ashley Kaufman struck out five in five innings and Lacey Lemburg hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Timberwolves beat the Bulldogs 10-0 in a nonleague softball game moved to Coeur d’Alene from Sandpoint due to soggy field conditions.

Emma Gray hit a solo homer in the third for Lake City (5-1).

“We were lucky to get the softball game in today,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “Sandpoint is a very well-coached team. Ashley Kaufman threw the ball extremely well and kept them off balance.”

Bri Barlow had two hits for Sandpoint (2-1), including a bunt single in the fourth inning to break up Kaufman’s no-hitter. Bri Baldree went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and walking six against one of the top teams in the state.

“Her change up was really working for her, and she was able to keep many Lake City batters off balance,” praised Bulldog head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams. “She was able to get into a rhythm today and really show how much she has grown as a pitcher.”

Hawkins-Williams praised her team’s ability to make the routine plays defensively, and noted Kaitlan Ward made an incredible grab at second base on a hard hit grounder to record an out and Naomi Bradley covered almost half of the outfield to catch a pop fly.

“The score doesn’t reflect how well the team played today. They were very aggressive, and that kind of battling in the box will pay off for all of them down the road,” described Hawkins-Williams. “We learned a lot today about what we need to improve upon and how we need to play to be successful in the future against tough teams.”

Sandpoint hosts Cheney on Saturday at noon.
