Special Olympics team sets barbecue fundraiser

| April 18, 2017 1:00 AM

The Sandpoint Special Olympics team is raising funds to attend the Idaho state games in Idaho Falls in June. The barbecue fundraiser will provide the necessary funding for transportation, lodging and meals for the athletes on the 1,200-mile trip.

A fundraiser is going to be held at the VFW Post 2453, 1325 Pine St., in Sandpoint on Saturday, April 22. The fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Holy Smoke BBQ will provide the smoked brisket and pulled pork. Egger’s Better Meats in Spokane has also generously donated some of the pork. As a result, 100 percent of proceeds will go directly to the Sandpoint Special Olympics team to be used for this trip.

The menu includes choice of beef brisket or pulled pork sandwich, choice of two sides — which include Texas cowboy beans (baked beans), sweet coleslaw, or country potato salad. You will get the standard southern fixin’s of onions, pickles, bread or bun, and homemade Lipsmacker barbecue sauce in either spicy or mild.

In addition, there will be a bake sale for dessert and a children’s carnival will be taking place on site for the kids.

You can purchase tickets in advance or at the door. Adult plates are $8, and children’s plates (under 12) are $5. Purchase extra for a friend or the less fortunate with the “gift-a-meal option.

And as always, additional donations are also accepted and greatly appreciated.
