SANDPOINT — A Subaru was fished from the muddy bank of Sand Creek on Friday morning after its operator neglected to engage the vehicle’s parking brake, according to Selkirk Fire EMS & Rescue officials.

There were no injuries or hazardous material releases, said Battalion Chief Kevin Amorebieta.

The vehicle’s operator parked it on the slope at the southern end of Gunnings Alley and Bridge Street. The Outback rolled north out of Gunning’s Alley, across a swath of grass and became wedged on its side on the creek bed against a boardwalk.

“It was a manual transmission and he left his car in neutral,” Amorebieta said.

Lake Pend Oreille remains drawn down to its winter pool elevation, so the car wound up on the exposed bed of Sand Creek.

“If the water level had been up, that car would have been definitely in the water,” Amorebieta said.
