April 27, 1917 — GRAFT CHARGES MADE

Earl D. Farmin made sensational charges against Mayor Himes in the Methodist church Sunday which led to a public meeting at the Rink. Farmin charged that Himes took a $1500 bribe from the Spokane Bitumass Paving company on the first paving contract and sought $2000 or he would “block the deal,” from a company interested in buying the street car line. At Monday’s meeting at the Rink, Mr. Farmin repeated the charges and said he did not feel called upon to divulge his information source. C.E. Wailes asked Mr. Himes if he ever received money in connection with the paving and Mr. Himes answered “no, sir.” John Sengfelder of the paving company also denied that the company paid any money to Mr. Himes.

HENDERSON QUITS AS SCHOOL HEAD

G.W. Henderson, superintendent of the city schools, was asked for his resignation by the school board at a meeting in the Central school building that followed a public meeting at the Rink where 479 signatures on a general petition and 79 signatures on a students’ petition were filed with the board asking for Henderson’s immediate resignation. Events leading to the mass meeting came thick and fast after last Friday when Supt. Henderson advised against the presence at the Junior Prom of members of the Boise militia. A delegation from the high school paraded the street Wednesday and 80 students left school on a “sympathetic strike.”
