Margaret May Stevens

| April 27, 2017 1:00 AM

Margaret May (Hadley) Stevens was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Sandpoint, Idaho, to parents William Ralph Hadley and Ethel (Garrison) Hadley. She passed away December 21, 2016 at Hearthstone in Kootenai, Idaho.

“Maggie”, as her friends called her, lived in Sandpoint her whole life. She married Ray Stevens Oct. 31, 1941, one day after she turned 18 years old.

She enjoyed traveling to the camps during elk season, and filling her pantry each year with a variety of home canned products. We don’t know what her secret was in keeping the deer and other wildlife out of her beautiful flower beds!

Margaret sewed many lovely articles of clothing for her family, and was the bookkeeper for her husband’s logging business. She belonged to TOPS for several years, played pinochle with a group of four every week for 10 years, and enjoyed bingo at the VFW on Thursday nights.

Of all her hobbies, the one she professed to love the most was quilt making. She belonged to the Panhandle Piece Making Quilt Guild, where she attended many quilt shows, including the Bonner County Fair, receiving many top awards.

Margaret was a mother who sat quietly at home while four of her sons served their country during the Vietnam War. Her courage was seen in her pride of her children’s service to their country.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray in 1994; her son, Joe Stevens; and three brothers, Duane (Jean), Raymond, and Glenn; and two sisters, Eileen (Don)Baldwin, Lucille (Bob) Allen

She is survived by five of her six children, Bill (Jerri) Stevens, John (Loretta) Stevens, Paul (Ruthie) Stevens, Gary (Lynn) Stevens and Laurel (David) Arnold; nine grandchildren and several step-grandchildren whom she loved the same.

Maggie also is survived by four sisters-in-law, Shirley (Dick) Stevens, Doris (Boyd) Stevens, Ann (Raymond) Hadley, and Donna (Glenn) Hadley.

A time to remember Margaret and a potluck luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the VFW Hall, corner of Pine and Division, Sandpoint. Please join us as we share memories of Margaret.
