SHS competes in Kraus Invite

| April 29, 2017 1:00 AM

HAYDEN LAKE — Chase Mitchell earned medalist honors for the second time in five days, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to lead Coeur d’Alene’s boys to the team title at the Kraus Invitational at Avondale Golf Club.

Coeur d’Alene shot 307 on its home course. Post Falls and Kellogg tied for second at 320.

“For cold, miserable conditions ... it was nasty for most of the tourney,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “Avondale is a tough course, even if it’s your home course.”

Just before the tourney began, Duncan and assistant coach Dan Porter, who is also the head pro at Avondale, figured a 315 would win it, given the conditions.

“The boys exceeded our expectations,” Duncan said. “Especially Chase Mitchell. Shooting 2-under would have been exceptional on a warm, sunny day.”

Cade Finlay of Kellogg was second with a 72, followed by Cameron Flores of Post Falls with a 75.

Mt. Spokane won the girls tournament, also at Avondale, with a 341. Lake City was second at 351, followed by Post Falls (361) and Coeur d’Alene (371).

Sami Dement of Lake City was third with an 82.

Duncan also had praise for his girls team.

“They have improved a whopping 70 team strokes on the season,” he said. “Martina Hicks as a freshman shooting in the 80s is phenomenal. Very proud of Jessica Fahy breaking into the 80s after struggling early.”

“For as wet as the course was, I’m just glad we got it in,” Duncan added. “After Wednesday’s storm I was wondering if we were going to get it in.”

Next up for most of the teams is the Sandpoint Invitational Monday at the Idaho Club.
