The 7B Walking Programs are starting for the summer, beginning the first week of May. This almost sounds like an “ad” and why do I want to put it in the editorial section?

Last summer I joined this incredible group of walkers and made friends, lost weight and experienced a healthier, more active lifestyle. Then, winter hit and I hibernated on the sofa and gained some weight. So, I was looking forward to joining the summer walking groups again through Sandpoint’s Parks and Recreation Department.

I was just told that participation is very poor and without community support the program won’t be able to continue through the summer. This program offers people of all ages and walking levels a chance to get outside, meet new people and get healthy — one step at a time. It isn’t about how far you walk or how fast you walk — it is simply about taking that first step.

The May walking program includes two groups:

Morning Walking Group, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at Travers Park on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and Evening Walking Group, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at Sand Creek Trail on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday

Walkers need to register at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation and the fee is $15 per each session, which is a month long. If you bring in a note/prescription from your doctor recommending you walk, there is no fee.

Please join us in our community effort to get everyone out walking, enjoying Mother Nature and ultimately, experience a healthier lifestyle.
