SAMUELSON DEDICATES FARRAGUT

Governor Don Samuelson dedicated Farragut State Park on Aug. 1, first day of the World Scout Jamboree “for the use and enjoyment of the people of Idaho, of the nation and the free world.”

In his remarks, the Governor said, “I wonder how many here today recall that we are on the location of what was once the largest “city” in Idaho. I remember vividly because 23 years ago I climbed off a troop train from Davenport, Iowa and became a resident of Camp Farragut along with 60,000 other sailors. This was the place I called home for two years during World War II, so it is with much sentiment and affection that I say what an unsurpassed pleasure it is for me to be here to participate in these ceremonies.

“It is my high honor to dedicate the permanent park facilities. Farragut has run the complete cycle. From the largest city in the state nearly 25 years ago, the area became a ghost camp. But it emerges today in magnificence and splendor for the pure enjoyment of all peoples. In a state richly blessed with an abundance of natural appeal, Mother nature bestowed one of her most gracious smiles on this entire area.”

There was plenty of variety to July’s weather, so far as the thermometer was concerned, the highest notch measured at the experiment station being 96 on July 16, and the lowest 35 degrees on July 24. Average maximum temperature was 85.4 and average minimum 45.3. The month’s precipitation was only .001. Frost was reported July 24, 29 and 31 in low places. No great damage was done though potato and bean vines in some of the local gardens were touched up.

WARRANT FOR I.W.W. LOCAL SECRETARY

A warrant issued Saturday awaits the return to Sandpoint of Dave Rummell, secretary of the local I.W.W., whose headquarters in this city were closed last week on order of Sheriff Remer.

Whether he remained away on learning of the warrant or will return when he has completed business elsewhere is unknown. Complaint was made under the anti-syndicalism law passed by the last legislature, charging Rummell with being “feloniously a member of a society formed to teach and advocate doctrines of criminal syndicalism, to-wit that certain society commonly called the Industrial Workers of the World.”
