Week packed with legendary entertainment, fun

SANDPOINT – So, this is that legendary weekend we wait for all year, where the sheer number of entertainment options makes our heads swim and our hearts swell. Heady language, that? Well, the lineup below bears it out quite nicely.

Coming out of the blocks tonight, it’s The Head and the Heart in concert at the Festival at Sandpoint, with Iration/The Wailers, George Thorogood and the Destroyers and the Grand Finale symphony concert rounding out the final weekend of our world-class summer concert series.

Also this weekend, POAC’s Arts & Crafts Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday at City Beach and The Hive has two great ‘Aftival’ shows planned for Friday and Saturday nights.

Looking ahead a bit, there are two original plays that open on Aug. 18 — one at the Panida Little Theater and another at the Heartwood Center — both locally written, directed and produced and featuring strong local casts.

Thursday, Aug. 10

The Head and the Heart

Venue: Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open for at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Head and the Heart’s self-titled debut album captured an undeniable creative partnership between six strangers thrown together by little more than a shared love of music. It became one of Sub Pop Records’ best-selling debut releases ever, and rocketed the band to acclaim well beyond its then-home base in Seattle. Opening the show will be the Roman Candles.

Maya Goldblum with Bright Moments

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

World traveling Sandpoint native, Maya Goldblum is back in town and is gracing the Beer Hall with a special appearance — even more so because Bright Moments is backing her up!

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Friday, Aug. 11

Iration/The Wailers

Venue: Festival at Sandpoint, dance show, Memorial Field, Ontario St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Iration is an alternative/reggae group of musicians who met while growing up in Hawaii and formed a deep-rooted, reggae influence is fused with elements of rock, dub and pop to create smooth original sounds.

The legendary and incomparable Wailers band gained fame as Bob Marley’s band and now carries on its revolutionary reggae sound and message to loyal fans around the world.

Note: The field will be configured for a dance show.

Devon Wade Band

Get your dancing shoes on with one of the area’s best country rock bands!

Beats Antique at the Aftival

Saturday, Aug. 12

George Thorogood & The Destroyers

Venue: Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

For classic rock fans, George Thorogood and the Destroyers are bringing their 2017 Rock Party Tour to Memorial Field. The boogie-blues rock icon is joined by opening act, The White Buffalo, an American singer-songwriter who was named as one of NPR’s 12 new artists to watch.

POAC Arts & Crafts Fair

Venue: Sandpoint City Beach

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

More than 100 arts and crafts booths and over 30 new crafters this year! Food vendors, live music and lots, lots more.

CYM Marimba Band

Venue: Farmin Park, Third Ave. & Oak St., downtown Sandpoint.

Time: Market starts at 9 a.m., music from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Strolling on a sunny Saturday with the tropical groove of marimbas setting the mood – perfect, right?

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Dance to ‘Country Plus’

Venue: Sandpoint Senior Center, 820 Main St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Dance from 1-4 p.m., potluck at 2:30 p.m. (Dances held every second and fourth Saturday of each month.

Mobius Riff

The gentleman from Mobius Riff play an eclectic mix of jazz, rock, Celtic, classical, Middle Eastern, featuring Tom Duebendorfer, Larry Higgins, John Sarchio and Larry Guldberg.

Truck Mills Band

The 219er hosts acclaimed Northwest guitarist Truck Mills and his four-piece band.

Sunday, Aug. 13

Grand Finale Symphony Concert

Venue: Memorial Field, Ontario St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., concert starts at 6:30 p.m.

‘Nordic Nights’ theme features the Spokane Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Gary Sheldon. The Scandinavian inspired program also features Grieg’s powerful Piano Concerto featuring the triumphant return of piano soloist Tien Hsieh. The second half of the program includes Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt Suite’ and Sibelius’ ‘Finlandia.’ Preceding the concert, the annual “Taste of the Stars” Wine Tasting, complimentary for all concertgoers over the age of 21, and closing with a spectacular fireworks display.

Friday, Aug. 18

‘Jingle’

Venue: Panida Little Theater, 304 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

In this light-hearted comedy produced by Panida Playhouse and Com Tech, Inc., Jodie goes home to Gram’s house for the summer and needs to rely on the assistance of her new friend when Grams goes missing. This 12-year-old sleuth’s search to answer lots of shadowy questions will keep you in stitches.

‘Secret Shame’

You are cordially invited as the Unknown Locals mount a new play written by Chris Herron and directed by Madeline Elliott. The performance includes local actors Kate McAlister, Dorothy Prophet, Eric Bond, Nicole Burato, Jeremiah Campbell and Alex Cope.
