A few months ago, it was a train derailment along Highway 95 where all of the derailed cars were full of corn. Now, 30 coal cars derailed outside of Noxon, Mont., spilling coal into the Clark Fork River. What’s next? There has to be a better way.

Years ago people and freight traveled by horse-drawn wagons and stage coaches. Then along came the railroads making that mode of transportation obsolete. It’s now time to put the Railroads into that category as well. What happens if the next train derailment going through Sandpoint or surrounding areas has 30 tank cars full of flammable or hazardous liquid?

The other day while driving on Highway 95 toward Sagle, I was traveling alongside of a very long train — half were tank cars, and I wanted to see just how fast that train was going. I speed up to 78 mph and stayed even with that train. Come on, 78 mph is ridiculous.

Something has to be done now before we have a real disaster on our hands. Forget that other bridge the railroads want next to the existing bridge.
