Saturday afternoon I happen to be standing on the sidewalk, outside on the south side of First Avenue chatting with friends when I heard a loud crashing sound. I looked up and saw that a car, that had been parked diagonally, had been driven over the curb, across the sidewalk and had come to rest against the outside wall of the business in front of this vehicle.

The driver had started the car and put the car in drive and steeped on the gas petal. After making sure everybody was all right, it hit me that had anyone (visitors, seniors or children) been walking down the sidewalk in front this of this car, the city would have a huge public relations problem on their hands.

I wonder if the brainiacs who decided to increase parking by installing diagonal parking understood this risk. I hope someone doesn’t have to die before we fix this. A single steel post in front of each parking space would avoid the real sever impact of someone getting hurt or killed next time, and there will be a next time. Please don’t let this happen to our town.

Mayor and Sandpoint City Council, are you listening?
