Polly Irvin-Pizzi caught this woodpecker in action working hard for a meal. Depending on the species, woodpeckers tongues can be up to 4 inches long to help them get bugs and seeds and nuts out of trees and holes, wrote Polly Irvin-Pizzi. They can be very annoying at about 5 in the morning with their rat-a-tat-tat.
