Wampus Cats get defensive in win over NIC

COEUR d’ALENE — First year Clark Fork head coach Jordan Adams said before the season her team would hang its hat on stingy defense, and it paid off with a 46-26 win and season sweep of North Idaho Christian on Monday night during nonleague girls basketball in Coeur d’Alene.

Tessa Sutton led the Wampus Cats (2-5) with 12 points, and Ellie Kiebert drained two 3-pointers among her nine points, as Clark Fork allowed just two first quarter points after changing up the pre-game routine.

“My girls came out strong. We mixed up our warm-ups and I think it’s helping them be more prepared in the first quarter. We’re getting a lot of good shot looks, and as soon as our shots start falling we’re going to be pretty darn good,” said Adams. “Kiebert had two really nice threes. Their shots are starting to fall, and they picked up their defense tonight and figured out how to shut down the other team.”

Mary Schlader led the Royals (4-6) with 18 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks and five steals.

Clark Fork will face the Sandpoint J2 team on Wednesday in Sandpoint.
