Local hockey players make the most of the glassy black ice on Wednesday on Lake Pend Oreille, playing some pickup games in front of War Memorial Field. Pond hockey, also called shinny in Canadian parlance, is akin to street basketball, with pickup games taking place outside in the elements. Wednesdays games drew around 20 players, both men and women and young and old, of varying skill levels. For a purist, its pretty tough to beat hockey on the lake.
