Katherine Josephine Golden Akers
Katherine “Katy” Josephine Golden Akers, a longtime resident of Sandpoint, Idaho, died of pancreatic cancer in her home on Monday morning, Jan. 30, 2017.
Katy was born in Detroit, Mich., in 1949 to a chemist father and a school teacher mother. After high school she traveled widely, eventually settling in North Idaho to raise her four boys.
A gardener, animal lover and political activist in the Democratic Party, Katy vocally supported causes ranging from women’s rights, fighting hunger, and animal cruelty laws to social justice and civil liberties.
Katy’s passion for animal training and rehabilitation led to a steady pace of adoptions from the local animal shelter. She was a constant presence on hiking trails, leading her canine charges to a steady, calmer life.
She is survived by her two brothers, four sons, and three grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Katy’s life this Saturday at the home of her son, Joe Akers.
Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is handling the arrangements. Please visit Katy’s online memorial at www.lakeviewfuneral.com and sign her guest book.
