Marjorie Jean Calkins, 86, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at the Sandpoint United Methodist Church with Pastor Brent Dehlbom officiating.

Jean was born on Oct. 13, 1930, in Valley City, N.D., to Harry and Augusta Olafson. She grew up and attended schools in Marion, N.D. Jean married Willard Calkins on July 18, 1953, in Bismarck, N.D.

The family settled in Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1964. Jean raised four children and worked as a secretary for various businesses. After retirement, Jean donated her time tutoring young people in reading. She was always willing to offer a ride to those who needed one or to provide a meal.

Jean was a true friend always offering a helping hand and a smile of encouragement. She had “words of wisdom” for anyone who asked for her advice. Her faith in God was her guiding light. She was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She served as president of the Sandpoint Unit and was active in the Inland District UMW. As a member of the Morning Glory Circle, she helped assemble many quilts which were given to those in need. She was also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter V since 1989. She enjoyed cooking, baking pies, tending to her vegetable garden, and traveling to Israel, Australia, New Zealand, and Alaska.

She is survived by four children, Cynthia Tylman of Boise, Jennifer Anderson of Boise, Mark Calkins of Sagle, and Wendell Calkins of Sandpoint; and four grandchildren, Katelin Anderson, Austin Anderson, Rachel (Trevor) Brandon, and Kendra Calkins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willard, brother Jim Olafson, and grandson John Douglas Anderson.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is handling the arrangements.
