Hawks outlast Bulldogs

| February 17, 2017 12:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Dylan Vahey hit three 3-pointers en route to an 18 point, eight rebound night, leading the Hawks past the Bulldogs 53-46 in a 4A Inland Empire League boys hoops clash Thursday night at Les Rogers Court.

The Hawks (8-13, 3-1 4A IEL) led 24-14 at half before the Bulldogs, who suited up only eight players, scrapped their way back into the game. Kaden Davis added 10 points and four assists and Josiah Halland blocked four shots for the Hawks, who will clinch the No. 1 seed if Sandpoint beats Moscow on Saturday.

“It was a good ball game. Sandpoint has no quit in them, they battled right to the end. It could have gone either way,” said Hawks head coach Dave Stockwell. “I’m pleased with Dylan, he handled himself well, got to the rim.”

Robbie Johnson had a double-double to lead the Bulldogs (3-16, 0-3 4A IEL), Spencer Thompson added 10 points and two steals and Alex Stockton eight points and eight boards in defeat, as a slow first half proved too much to overcome.

“We played poorly in the first half, shot a low percentage with too many turnovers. In the second half we had a lot more composure on offense,” said Bulldogs coach Kent Leiss. “We had a chance to tie the game, climbed back up the mountain after a slow start.”

Sandpoint is at Moscow on Saturday in the final regular season game.
